Spoilers ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The fastest-living creature is back with a new nemesis and this time, he needs to team up with his family to save the world from becoming extinct.
Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) encounter an unfamiliar foe Shadow (Keanu Reeves) who wreaks havoc on Earth. He has quite the same powers as Sonic and was part of a secret government program called Project Shadow. Sonic’s enemy Doctor Eggman, or Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey), is joined by his grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik and Shadow to take control of the Eclipse Cannon. However, with some classic life lessons about vengeance, Shadow and Ivo have a change of heart.
When Sonic falls back to Earth while trying to stop the Eclipse Cannon from aiming towards the planet, Shadow and Ivo try to redirect the cannon towards space. They successfully do so but the blast is so strong that it’s assumed that they sacrificed themselves. But as we all know in the Sonic universe, you can easily revive yourself without explanation.
Do Shadow & Doctor Eggman Die in Sonic 3?
Well, one thing is for certain. Shadow does not die in Sonic 3. The villain-turned-hero is seen at the second end-credits scene where it’s a closeup on an explosion crater. We see his inhibitor ring stuck in the ground and only seeing his shoes, Shadow picks up his Inhibitor Ring. This is a major key point where it confirms that he’ll make an appearance in Sonic 4.
However, there whereabouts of Dr. Robotnik aren’t known. Unlike Shadow, Igor was inside the Eclipse Cannon making his chance for escape highly unlikely. Many theories arose like how he planned to have an escape pod or wasn’t impacted by the explosion. But maybe he’ll turn up in the future installments— echoing the same explanations about his mortality that happened after Sonic 2.
A new and very familiar character that will be added to the franchise is Amy Rose who, spoiler alert, is Sonic’s self-proclaimed girlfriend. In the first end-credits scene, Sonic finishes a race with Tails and Knuckles and is suddenly attacked by Metal Sonic robots. Amy Rose flies in and saves him from being obliterated by the group. Though she doesn’t say anything, we know that she’ll be a huge character in future installments.
