No one does winter quite like Rihanna. The singer effortlessly masters layering, mixes prints and patterns with ease—while also incorporating an element of surprise. Of course, the outfit she wore while out and about in New York City on Sunday, December 29, was no different. She looked as cool as ever in a worn vintage T-shirt, baggy blue jeans, a cropped leather jacket, layered chain necklaces, and camel-colored suede shoes. It was what she wore on her head, however, that completed the look. On top of her dark wavy hair sat a big, floppy fur hat. It featured a warm brown hue with shadows of caramel. The addition of the hat created an outfit that looks casual yet intentional.
Faux fur hats are no new phenomenon. They were quite popular in the 90s—think Pamela Anderson’s pink number at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. The style seemingly fizzled out in the years that followed, but reemerged in 2021 and 2022 thanks to stars like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski, and of course Rihanna. Prior to Sunday’s look, Rihanna donned a turquoise fur hat from Christian Lacroix’s fall 2002 collection at the British Fashion Awards on December 2. She paired the accessory with a plunging fur dress that exposed her black bustier bra.
The great thing about fur (or faux fur) hats is that they can be dressed up or down. Style them for a fun night out with a slip dress and heeled knee-high boots, or rock them for a coffee date with a white T-shirt, jeans, sneakers, and a statement coat.
